COP29 Azerbaijan

What is COP29?

COP is called "Conference of the Parties" and the number 29 in the name indicates that the event is the 29th in number.

COP29, the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference, will be held on November 11-22, 2024 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

The main objective of the conference

The main goal of the conference is to discuss global climate change problems and discuss strategies to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius within the framework of the Paris Agreement. In addition, developed countries are raising funds for financial assistance to help developing countries adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change.

"Year of Green World Solidarity"

By order of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, 2024 has been declared the "Year of Green World Solidarity" in the country. The country has announced that it intends to increase the potential of renewable energy sources to 30 percent by 2030 and diversify the existing energy system.

As the host country, Azerbaijan has pledged to make a significant contribution to green energy initiatives. The country aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050, increase renewable energy capacity to 30% by 2030, and diversify its energy system through investments in wind, hydro, solar, and clean hydrogen projects.

What will the preparation for COP29 look like?

By order of President Ilham Aliyev, taking into account international experience, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the country Mukhtar Babayev has been appointed president of the COP29 event, which will be held in the country.

Which celebrities attended COP29?

COP28, held in Dubai, was attended by King Charles III of Great Britain and other world leaders and politicians. The event was also attended by US Vice President Kamala Harris, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Co-Chair Bill Gates, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In addition, the famous actor Leonardo DiCaprio also attended. It has been confirmed so far that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Pakistani Prime Minister Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif and Israeli President Isaac Herzog will arrive in Baku to attend COP29.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is among those invited to the COP29 event. However, there is no official news about sending an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin. If the heads of both states come to Azerbaijan, this will be their first opportunity to meet since Russia's attack on Ukraine.
