Introduction to COP29:

Explaining the importance of the conference as a major international forum for discussing climate change

COP29 (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties) is a significant event aimed at strengthening global efforts to combat climate change. Held in 2024, the conference focused on key issues such as reducing carbon emissions, protecting natural resources, and accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources amidst the intensifying climate crisis. The outcomes of COP29 were accompanied by several new agreements, setting the foundation for future climate policies. The conference particularly led to increased cooperation between developed and developing countries, along with steps toward a more equitable distribution of carbon taxes and financial assistance. This event marked a crucial milestone in achieving global climate goals.

Azerbaijan successfully hosted this large-scale event, showcasing its high-level organizational capabilities in the field. The official decision to thank Azerbaijan for the successful organization of COP29 is a clear testament to this achievement. Based on the outcomes of the conference, several key decisions were made:

Achieved Results:
Pic.1. Agreement on the Baku Financial Goal
Pic.1. Agreement on the Baku Financial Goal
  1. Agreement on the Baku Financial Goal (BFG)

One of the most important decisions made at COP29 was the agreement on the Baku Financial Goal (BFG), which aims to direct $1.3 trillion in climate financing annually to developing countries.

BFG sets a target for developed countries to mobilize at least $300 billion annually by 2035 for assistance to developing nations.

  1. Full Activation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement

Countries and companies will now be able to collaborate to achieve their climate goals through high-quality and transparent carbon markets. The implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement is expected to save $250 billion annually, marking a significant step in the fight against global warming.

  2. Full Institutionalization of the Loss and Damage Fund

COP29 took a critical step in launching the Loss and Damage Fund, which will provide substantial support to small island states and African countries that are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

  3. Creation of the Baku Adaptation Roadmap

Another key decision taken at the conference was the creation of the Baku Adaptation Roadmap, which will serve as the foundation for future high-level dialogues and cooperation on climate adaptation.

Key Achievements of COP29:

  1. Energy Commitments: Commitments and statements were made on issues such as energy storage, networks, zones, corridors, and hydrogen. These commitments were endorsed by 150 parties.

  2. Green Digital Action Declaration: Over 75 governments and more than 1,100 participants from the digital industry signed a declaration aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing climate resilience using digital technologies.

  3. Methane Reduction from Organic Waste: Over 50 countries, accounting for 51% of global methane emissions from organic waste, signed a declaration that will contribute to the Global Methane Pledge.

  4. Climate Harmony Initiative for Farmers: A platform that brings together existing climate initiatives in agriculture, aimed at providing farmers with accessible support and easier access to financial resources.

Water Initiative:

COP29 also launched the Water Initiative for Climate Action, endorsed by nearly 50 countries, which promotes greater regional and international cooperation on water issues in the context of climate change.

These achievements of COP29 were an important step towards achieving global climate goals and strengthening international cooperation on climate change.

COP30: The Global Fight Against Climate Change:

The 30th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), or COP 30, will take place in November 2025 in Belém, Brazil. This event will be a key moment in the global fight against climate change, where nations will discuss measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to inevitable climate changes, and provide financial support to countries most affected by climate disasters. COP30 will serve as a platform for deepened international cooperation and the search for innovative solutions to achieve a sustainable and equitable future for all.

Key Topics to be Discussed:
  1. Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: At COP 30, countries will discuss strategies for reducing carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane, and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. Under the Paris Agreement, signed in 2015, there is a global commitment to limiting the rise in global temperatures to well below 2°C, ideally to 1.5°C, compared to pre-industrial levels.

  2. Climate Change Adaptation: Even with significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, some climate changes are already irreversible. COP 30 will focus on how countries can adapt to these changes, such as protecting against flooding, droughts, hurricanes, and improving the resilience of agriculture and infrastructure to extreme weather events.

  3. Climate Change Financing: Developing countries, which are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, are calling for financial support to help them adapt and transition to green energy. Discussions will center on how to increase climate financing to these countries.

  4. Technologies and Innovations: The conference will also address new technologies and innovations that can help reduce emissions and combat the effects of climate change. These may include renewable energy solutions, carbon capture technologies, and other breakthroughs aimed at mitigating the climate crisis.

 Venue of COP 30:

The host country for the conference will be chosen in advance, with various nations submitting bids to host the event. The country that is selected to host COP 30 will be responsible for organizing the logistics of the conference and creating the conditions necessary for effective negotiations.

This conference will provide an important platform for countries around the world to intensify their efforts to fight climate change, share innovations, and ensure that vulnerable nations receive the support they need to adapt to a changing climate.
